Installing a Video Game Mod: Cry of Fear

This guide will instruct those whom do not know how to install a mod the proper steps in successfully installing a computer game mod. This guide is for installing the Half-Life mod Cry of Fear onto a PC. This is meant to be a general guide and it is always important to read any installation instructions specific to a modification. Always be sure of what you are downloading and do not download software from an untrusted source.


If you have Half-Life installed, skip to step 4. Otherwise, begin at step 1. Steps 4-7 could be omitted since they are made redundant by step 8, but I felt that I should direct those interested to the mod's main ModDB page for information related to the mod.

1. Launch Steam—or download Steam from their website.

2. Install Half-Life using Steam. This may take several minutes to an hour.

3. Run the game once it has installed and updated. I suggest playing through the "Training Room" level to learn the game's basic controls.

4. Navigate to the Cry of Fear page on website Mod. Alternatively, click this direct link.

5. Click on the downloads link under the release date.

6. Click the link to download Cry of Fear - Version 1.0.

7. Scroll down the page and click the "Download Now" icon to open a window with the download link.

8. Click on the download link to open another page. Alternatively, you can skip steps 4-7 and click this link to directly take you to the File Front download page.

9. Click the "download now" icon. When the download appears, save it where you can find it or run the program.

10. Run the program and follow the installation instructions within. This may take several minutes.

11. Look on your desktop (or in the program list in the start menu) for an icon labeled "Cry of Fear Launcher". Double click this icon.

12. Check the settings in the window that pops up to make sure the game will run smoothly on your computer. For additional help, click the corresponding link in the launcher labeled "Help."

13. Click "Launch" when you are ready to play.
